The honest answers to what customers ask us most
Buying a designer fixture feels like a bigger decision than a lamp from a big-box store. That’s fair. Here’s what we tell people when they email us before checkout.
Honest answer — the difference is in the finish, the shade material, and the socket engineering. Big-box lookalikes photograph similarly and read very differently in the room, especially when the light is on. A Visual Comfort shade diffuses; a printed-fabric imitation flattens. Fixtures live on the ceiling for decades, so the per-year cost of choosing well is usually the smaller number.
Amazon’s return window covers you if the scale is wrong on arrival. The usual sizing rule for a dining chandelier is roughly half to two-thirds the table width; for a foyer, add your room’s length and width in feet and use that number in inches as the fixture diameter. If you email us your room dimensions before ordering, we’ll shortlist two or three fixtures from our catalog that will fit.
Flush mounts, wall sconces on existing junction boxes, and lamps are usually confident-DIY territory. Chandeliers over a certain weight (typically anything above about 25 lbs, or anything on an old brace) and any new circuit run should be done by a licensed electrician — both for safety and because most homeowner insurance policies expect it. Not at all. Semi-flush fixtures give you the designed look of a chandelier with only a few inches of drop, and many of our smaller pendants and drum fixtures are chain-adjustable specifically for 8-foot ceilings. The bottom of any hanging fixture should sit about 7 feet off the floor in a pass-through space, or about 30 to 36 inches above a dining table — that math works fine with a low ceiling.

Aim for LED bulbs rated at 2700K color temperature and CRI 90 or higher — that’s the range that reads as warm, restaurant-quality light instead of cool office light. Put the fixture on a dimmer if you can; every one of our designer chandeliers and sconces looks its best at about 60 to 70 percent brightness rather than full power. That single change fixes more “the room feels wrong at night” complaints than any fixture swap alone.
